One of the three retained players, Rajat Patidar, was selected as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 captain.
Prior to the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, Rajat Patidar has been confirmed as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Head coach Andy Flower and Director of Cricket Mo Bobat made the news on Thursday. The RCB started looking for a new captain after South Africa's Faf du Plessis was fired from the team after leading the team for the previous three seasons. Although there were rumors that Virat Kohli might take the captaincy once more, the management decided to trust Patidar."I believe it is a fantastic chance for me to gain knowledge from one of cricket's top players. His background will be useful to me as a leader. I've worked with him on numerous partnerships, so I know him well. "His insights and expertise will undoubtedly support me in my leadership position," Patidar remarked on his collaboration with Kohli.
Even though Patidar made his debut for India in the home series against England last year, he was dismissed after scoring 32, 9, 5, 17, and two ducks. But T20 cricket is where his true skill lies. After leading Madhya Pradesh to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, Patidar's team was defeated by Mumbai, headed by Shreyas Iyer. The right-hander has been hitting spinners for fun and has been in incredible condition.
One of the three players kept, Patidar, joined RCB for the first time in the 2021 Indian Premier League and made 71 runs in just four games. After that, he returned to the team in 2022 for INR 20 lakh, replacing the injured Luvnith Sisodia. He amassed 333 runs, his highest being 112 not out. He knocked off the Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After that, the right-hander sustained an injury that kept him out of the 2023 season. Patidar scored 395 runs at a strike rate of 177.13 and an average of 30.38 during the previous season.
"I don't think I'm turning around. From now, I'm looking forward. Therefore, as I previously stated, we have a large number of seasoned players as well as seasoned leaders. And as we proceed from here, I am confident that it will be beneficial to me. As a result, my approach to leadership is unique. I believe I will follow my gut. Additionally, I will be asking some of the more seasoned players questions during that time, which will undoubtedly aid me in my leadership role," Patidar continued.
The record of Rajat Patidar with RCB
In his 27 IPL games with RCB, Patidar has amassed 799 runs at an average of 34.74 and a strike rate of 158.85. Although Patidar is an essential member of the RCB's top order, it is unclear how he would handle the extra duty of captaincy.
Major names like Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Tim David, Jitesh Sharma, and Phil Salt were purchased by RCB in the blockbuster auction. But the team also let go of some big-name players, such Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell.
