With 35 features, the most successful movie franchise in history has made nearly $1 billion at the box office on average.
Despite their current popularity in Hollywood, movie franchises are a tried-and-true practice. For more than 90 years, the film industry has produced spinoffs and sequels to well-known movies. In addition to making millions at the box office, many of these have grown into franchises. The highest-grossing of them all has made more money than James Bond, Harry Potter, and all of Star Wars combined. The highest-grossing movie series worldwide
The largest and highest-grossing movie franchise in movie history is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which consists of multiple separate film series and spinoffs. The 35 MCU films that have been released since 2008 have brought in over $31 billion at the global box office, much above Star Wars' second-place earnings of slightly over $10 billion. With a combined total revenue of $11 billion, the three Spider-Man films barely surpass Star Wars. But the MCU is the best.
The fact that the MCU has made four times as much as its main competitor, the DC Extended Universe ($7.7 billion), is actually a good indicator of its dominance at the box office. The $31 billion total revenue surpasses the earnings of the next three largest franchises combined. The combined earnings of James Bond ($7.8 billion), Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts ($9.6 billion), and Star Wars ($10.3 billion) have been less than $28 billion.
How the MCU was the best
The MCU has the advantage of having a world, which includes multiple movies and even television shows, to be fair to the other brands. For example, it includes the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and a stand-alone Avengers series with four films that have made $7.7 billion. Together, these and other movies make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has a total of 35 films. No other franchise has more than a dozen, with the exception of James Bond. Additionally, most of the Bond movies were released in the 1960s and 1970s, when box office receipts were significantly lower. However, MCU has a high success rate as well. Only two box office flops have occurred, and both were rather recent. With fewer films than Avatar, Jurassic Park, and Despicable Me, the franchise has an average of little under $900 million per picture.
The MCU's future
As of right now, the MCU is rapidly approaching the $40 billion milestone. There are more than six films in the works, with the latest one, Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release this weekend.including the two primary Avengers movies in 2026–2027.
