If the Trump administration moves forward with 25% tariffs, Trudeau says Canada is prepared to react.

Canada has claimed that in order to stop illegal immigration and the influx of fentanyl, it has boosted border security using drones and canine units.

Toronto According to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, if the US President Donald Trump Administration go forward with imposing 25% tariffs on Saturday, Ottawa will be prepared with a "forceful and immediate response."

In a post on X, Trudeau stated, "We're working hard to prevent these tariffs, but if the United States moves ahead, Canada's ready with a forceful and immediate response."

On Friday, the eve of the date he had stated the tariffs would take effect, Trump reaffirmed the threat of them. Three Canadian cabinet ministers have been in Washington in recent days to communicate with their American counterparts. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Public Safety Minister David McGuinty, and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller are all in the US capital.

Canada has claimed that in order to stop illegal immigration and the spread of fentanyl, it has stepped up border patrols with drones and canine units.

Additionally, it seems to have boosted enforcement efforts, as two Indo-Canadians were taken into custody on Tuesday in the Swift Current district of the province of Saskatchewan after police discovered eight kilograms of fentanyl concealed beneath the spare tire of the car they were riding in. The two were identified as Kunwardeep Singh, 28, and Swati Narula, 26, all of whom were from Calgary, Alberta.

As Trudeau stated before heading to a Canada-US Council meeting in Toronto on Friday, "right now, we're showing the new American administration that they have a strong partner in Canada when it comes to upholding border security, all while simultaneously underscoring that we won't back down, that if tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond." "It's not what we want," he said, "but if he moves forward, we will also act.”

Trump repeatedly mentioned the deadly synthetic drug fentanyl and how much of it "comes through Canada" as China manufactures it and "puts it through different places," suggesting that he is unimpressed with Canada's promises to control the border. "A lot of them come through Canada and a lot of fentanyl comes through Canada," he added, referring to the fact that criminals were taking the same path.

Trudeau hasn't heard from him lately. "I think Justin Trudeau would be wise to talk to President Trump directly before pushing outlandish comments like that to the media," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added in response to Trudeau's remarks.
