According to Justin Trudeau, his government will defend Canadians and their employment even though it does not wish to intensify the conflict.
Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that he has no option but to implement countermeasures, just hours after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on nearly everything the US imports from Canada.Justin Trudeau spoke directly to Americans during a press conference in Ottawa, citing the two neighbors' common history as well as their historic military and security ties.
"From the fields of Flanders to the streets of Kandahar, from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of the Korean peninsula, we have fought and died alongside you during your darkest hours," Trudeau remarked.
Indeed, we have had disagreements in the past, but we have always managed to work things out. As I have stated previously, President Trump would be better off working with Canada rather than punishing us if he wishes to usher in a new era of prosperity for the United States.
Trudeau stated that his administration will defend Canadians and their employment, even if it does not wish to intensify the conflict.
"We definitely don't intend to escalate. However, we will defend Canada, Canadians, and Canadian jobs," declared Trudeau, who had previously declared he would resign from his position once his party elected a new leader.
According to Trudeau, Americans will suffer as a result of Trump's actions, and the upcoming weeks will be challenging for both Canadians and Americans.
"Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities," Trudeau told Americans. "They will make everything more expensive for you, from groceries to gas stations."
The tariffs imposed by Trump
Citing a "major threat" from drugs and illegal immigration, US President Donald Trump has slapped tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, three of the US's top trading partners.
Trump has levied a 10% tariff on Chinese goods and a 25% tax on imports from Canada and Mexico.
The tariffs will be in place "until the crisis is alleviated," according to the White House. The officials did not, however, specify what steps the three nations must do in order to be exempted from Trump's tariff levies.
