PVR and Inox were punished by a consumer court in Bengaluru for wasting viewers' time with lengthy advertisements and trailers that lasted longer than the allotted time for the movie.
The theater chain PVR-Inox has come under fire from a Bengaluru district consumer court for "wasting" patrons' time with lengthy commercials before a movie starts. In a complaint against PVR, a viewer claimed that the service kept playing advertisements and trailers for half an hour after the start of a movie's planned showing time.
PVR Inox was punished by the consumer court Bar and Bench, which stated that on December 26, 2023, at 4:05 p.m., the complainant, Abhishek MR, went to see the Vicky Kaushal-starring film Sam Bahadur. However, the movie didn't start until 4:30 p.m., and the theater continued to show advertisements and trailers until 4:28 p.m.The complainant said that his plans for the remainder of the day were thrown off by this delay.
"In the modern era, time is considered money, each person's time is very precious, and no one has the right to gain benefit out of others' time and money," said a coram of President M Shobha, members K Anita Shivakumar, and Suma Anil Kumar, who passed the order against PVR-Inox in the case. It takes no less than twenty-five to thirty minutes to sit in a theater and watch whatever is being televised. Watching pointless commercials is really difficult for people with hectic schedules. To spend some time relaxing with their family, they arrange things on their own. People do not necessarily have no other tasks to perform because of this.
"Actual movie time should be mentioned on cinema tickets," the consumer forum said, adding that "PVR and Inox must stop engaging in unfair trade practices and not to exhibit advertisements beyond the scheduled show times mentioned in the ticket."
In addition to ₹8,000 to cover the costs he incurred to register the complaint, the court ordered PVR Cinemas and Inox to compensate the complainant ₹20,000 for causing him mental distress and inconvenience. In addition, the movie theater chain was forced to pay ₹1 lakh in punitive damages for unfair business practices. The consumer welfare fund must receive the payment within 30 days.
