According to a senior police official, the gunfight started when a combined security unit was conducting an anti-Maoist operation.
According to the police, a battle broke out in the jungle near the Gangaloor police station area at approximately 8.30 am on Saturday, killing eight Maoists in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.According to a senior police officer cited by news agency PTI, the gunfight started as a combined team of security forces was conducting an anti-Maoist operation.
The operation, which was started on Friday after learning of the presence of Maoist cadres from the "West Bastar division," was carried out by members of the state police's District Reserve Guard and Special Task Force, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), he said.
The move is consistent with the central government's commitment to "end Naxalism" by 2026, which Home Minister Amit Shah had reaffirmed on January 6 following the deaths of eight DRG jawans and one driver in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, when Maoists detonated their vehicle with an IED.
According to reports, the explosion happened in the Bijapur district on the Bedre-Kutru Road.
According to the IG, DRG Dantewada's jawans were returning in a Scorpio following a joint operation. IG Bastar noted that Dantewada, Narayanpur, and Bijapur were involved in the combined operation.
According to an official cited by PTI, the Maoist assault on the state police unit DRG was the largest Maoist attack on security forces in the previous two years. Ten police officers and a civilian driver were killed on April 26, 2023, when Maoists detonated their automobile, which was a part of a convoy transporting security guards in the nearby Dantewada district.
On the microblogging site X, Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his profound sadness over the DRG troops' deaths in the Bijapur IED explosion. Although words cannot adequately convey our sorrow, I can promise you that our heroes' sacrifice will not be in vain.
