Basil Joseph on Ponman's departure from comedy: "Want to try my hand at acting."

Basil Joseph discusses his most recent movie, Ponman, his future endeavors, and his thoughts on maybe directing Suriya in an interview with Hindustan Times.

He is renowned for both his exceptional acting abilities, particularly in comedic dramas, and for creating and directing the Malayalam superhero movie Minnal Murali. In contrast to his previous on-screen roles, Basil Joseph's most recent film as an actor is Ponman (Man with the Gold). His performance has received praise from both the audience and critics, and the actor, writer, and director says he is pleased with the reaction. He discusses his reasons for selecting this serious drama, which was helmed by Jothish Shankar, a new director, and his rumored collaboration with Suriya in an interview with Hindustan Times.

The difficulty of PP Ajesh gameplay
"I was immediately captivated by the drama, the characters, and the significance of the dowry issue discussed in GR Indugopan's book Nalanchu Cheruppakar when I first read it. The character of PP Ajesh also captivated me. The Ponman hero remarked, "I felt I should do this film regardless of anything else when I got the script."

Was he worried about his reception in this somber movie? "No, I simply wanted to try my hand at acting as well. It's the best-written role I've ever played in my acting career. For example, writing a comedy is more about making people laugh with your body language, conversations, and interactions.as well as linguistic humor. However, PP Ajesh's character has a lot of depth. I believed that exploring it and seeing how people accept it would be difficult for me as an actor. I was ecstatic," he remarked.

The underdog's victory
Since Ajesh was a very relevant character in a native context, the Jaya Jaya Jaya Jay Hey actor believed that Ponman's drama and emotions will resonate with the audience. "Ponman is the struggle of an underdog, the struggle of the average person." You may remove the gold component and swap it out with anything else. The character displays the underdog's victory together with his self-assurance and demeanor. In addition to fighting for his life, he seems to be stressing that having fun is an important part of life. Enjoy life while you can, but remember that life is a battle, Basil added.

When asked if he considered himself an underdog when he first started working in the Malayalam cinema industry ten years ago, the Sookshmadarshini actor said, "Of course! I didn't grow up in a wealthy family. I was raised in a village in the hilly area in a very traditional and devout family. For someone in that situation, entering the world of movies is therefore more than a fantasy. When I went to movies, I felt like the complete underdog.Even being given a chance in movies is not a win in and of itself; you have to fight for your life every day. In every movie, you have to draw audiences in, keep them entertained, stay competitive in the market, improve your craft, and so forth. You are therefore always the underdog. I doubt you will ever reach a position where you can say you've accomplished everything. Even after making 100 or 200 movies, you must retain the mindset that you are the underdog. You must treat each movie as though it were your very first.

New directors
Considering that Basil was a seasoned and accomplished director while Jothish Shankar was directing for the first time with Ponman,To what extent did he contribute to the movie? "Jothish has a lengthy history in the field. He was also an award-winning art director. To mention a few, he designed the art production for Bramayugam, Malayankunju, and Kumbalangi Nights. For him, Ponman is a personal life story since it is based on a true story in which he was a character. In the movie, he is also represented by a character. He is familiar with the setting and the characters. Although we worked together during pre-production, he made the decisions on site while I was an actress. Basil stated that you must respect the director's vision and refrain from interfering with it.

This year is busy for the actor.
Basil has already had two films released in January; his upcoming picture, Marana Mass, a Tovino Thomas production, will be out in April. Rajesh Madhavan, Siju Sunny, and Suresh Krishna are also in the film, which was directed by Sivaprasad, Basil's associate director. It's a comic entertainment and Sivaprasad's first movie. In addition, it's a very personal movie for me, and I think it will amuse people," he said.

The possibility of Basil directing a movie with Tamil star Suriya has generated a lot of discussion. What's the latest news on this? Basil chuckled and remained silent."Anything can happen," he concluded. There will undoubtedly be an update shortly that includes me as a director. Simply wait.
