Vijay Sethupathi starred in Nithilan Swaminathan's Tamil action thriller Maharaja, which debuted in Chinese theaters in November of last year. The movie has become the highest-grossing Indian picture in China in five years and is almost ready to join the ₹100 crore club in just over a month.In China, Maharaja does incredibly well.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing posted a significant update on the box office performance of Maharaja in China on her X account on Sunday. "Maharaja has become the highest-grossing Indian film," she captioned a picture of the movie that included the actors.

Following the October 2024 agreement to normalize relations between the two nations, which put an end to the impasse in eastern Ladakh, Maharaja became the first Indian film to be distributed in China.

On its first day in November 2024, the Vijay Sethupathi film made about RMB 13.37 million (₹15.6 crore) at the Chinese box office, according to movie ticket sales website Maoyan.

The movie received an impressive 8.7/10 rating on the Chinese review website Douban before to its release, making it "one of the highest-rated Indian films in recent years."

Maharaja, which was directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, also features Natty Natraj, Mamta Mohandas, and Anurag Kashyap. The movie centers on Chennai barber Maharaja (Sethupathi), who visits the police station solely to get his stolen trash can back.

Indian movies in China
When Maharaja debuted on Indian screens on June 14, it received a resounding reception and made over ₹100 crore domestically. Following a significant agreement between the two nations to patrol and disengage troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which put an end to the more than four-year border impasse, it is the first Indian film to be shown in China.

Aamir Khan's Indian flicks Secret Superstar, Dangal, and 3 Idiots were among the biggest box office hits in China in recent years. China boasts the most theaters in the world, with over 86,000 locations nationwide.
