US Stock Market LIVE: After AI stocks recover losses from the DeepSeek selloff, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq open higher.

US Stock Market LIVE: Following sharp losses in the previous session due to the popularity of a low-cost Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) model called "DeepSeek," which shook the stocks of US companies who invested in the technology, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures steadied on Tuesday, January 28. The benchmark S&P 500 sank almost 1.5% on Monday, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq plunged over 3%, its worst one-day performance in over a month.

Following the release of AI models by Chinese firm DeepSeek that it claims are comparable to or superior to industry-leading models in the US for a fraction of the price, Monday saw a selloff. Leading AI chip maker Nvidia increased 4.8% in pre-market trading the day after its shares plummeted 17% in the largest single-session loss for any firm, wiping out $600 billion from its market worth.

Other AI-related equities also saw some recovery, with Broadcom and Oracle climbing 4.5% and 3.5%, respectively. After plunging a day earlier, power firms were generally higher as they anticipate a spike in demand from energy-intensive data centers required to build AI technology. GE Vernova and Vistra both contributed 4.6%.

DeepSeek challenges a wager in markets that AI will drive demand throughout a supply chain from chipmakers to data centers by claiming to use less expensive chips and data. DeepSeek surpassed competitor AI platform ChatGPT to become the top-rated free application on Apple's App Store in the US.
