The corporation claims that the L&T chairman's comment about a 90-hour workweek "reflects larger ambition."

In response to criticism, L&T chairman SN Subrahmanyan clarified his remarks regarding staff putting in 90 hours each week.

In a statement, Larsen & Toubro clarified that the chairman's comments underscored that "extraordinary effort" is required for "extraordinary outcomes" after he expressed remorse for not being able to order his staff to work on Sunday.

The remarks made by SN Subrahmanyan that he wanted workers to put in 90 hours a week have drawn criticism. He was asked why the multibillion dollar corporation still required its staff to work on Saturdays during an employee encounter. "I apologize for not being able to force you to work on Sundays. I'll be happier if I can get you to work on Sundays because I do that myself," Subrahmanyan remarked.

He intensified his comments and asked his staff what they did in their spare time. "What do you do when you're at home?" How much time can you spend staring at your wife? He urged, "Come on, come to the office, and get to work."

The business has now reaffirmed his statements, stating that "a time demanding collective dedication and effort" is required to propel growth in India.

What the business stated
Nation-building is key to our mission at L&T. We have been influencing India's industry, infrastructure, and technological prowess for more than 80 years. We think that this is India's decade, a period that calls for teamwork and commitment to advance development and fulfill our common goal of becoming a developed country," they stated.

"The Chairman's remarks reflect this larger ambition, emphasizing that extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary effort," an L&T spokesperson explained in explaining their chairman's vision. At L&T, we're still dedicated to creating an environment where performance, passion, and purpose propel us forward.

Subrahmanyan faced backlash for his comments after the video was posted on Reddit, where they were likened to a similar suggestion made by Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, that workers should put in 70 hours a week.

"Yesterday, I participated in the speech. In L&T, someone inquired about sick leave. Why and how come we can only get sick for one day if it's only acceptable to get sick for two days? "Then don't get sick," he said," one user asserted.
