Stargate: SoftBank and OpenAI launch a $500 billion AI data center network in the US that will generate thousands of jobs.

Facilitating the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a level of AI with cognitive capabilities similar to those of humans, is a primary goal of the Stargate project.

At a White House press briefing on Tuesday, January 21, US President Donald Trump was joined by Larry Ellison of Oracle, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Masayoshi Son of Softbank in announcing The Stargate Project.

The Stargate Project is a network of data centers that will serve as the essential framework for OpenAI's artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the United States.

Together with MGX, these three businesses constitute the project's "initial equity funders," with a combined investment potential of $500 billion over the following four years.

OpenAI stated in a formal corporate statement that it will start allocating $100 billion for the project right away and that "this infrastructure will secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate massive economic benefit for the entire world."

"This project will not only help the United States re-industrialize, but it will also give America and its allies a strategic capability to safeguard their national security," the statement continued.

SoftBank and OpenAI will serve as the project's principal partners, with SoftBank handling financial duties and OpenAI handling operational duties.

Stargate's chairman will be Masayoshi Son.

In the meanwhile, the main early technological partners will include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI.

According to OpenAI, the rollout has already begun, with Texas as the starting point. As final agreements are being negotiated, it is also assessing possible locations for additional campuses throughout the United States.

The AI behemoth added that it will keep using more of Microsoft's Azure to train its models.

Facilitating the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a level of AI that can mimic human-like cognitive capacities, is a key goal of the project.
