RG Kar rape case LIVE: Sanjay Roy, the defendant in the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital rape case in Kolkata, West Bengal, will be sentenced today by a court.

Live RG Kar rape case: Sanjay Roy, who was found guilty of raping and killing a 31-year-old duty doctor inside the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, will be sentenced by a CBI court on Monday afternoon. Around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Roy was brought from jail to the court under strict security. Nearly 500 police officers have been sent in to guard against any unexpected incidents, and the Sealdah court has been fortified.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, chose not to comment on the projected length of the accused's punishment. According to her, "it depends on the judge and how the case has been framed, but I had previously demanded the death penalty."

Roy was found guilty on Saturday by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of raping and killing the postgraduate trainee at the hospital on August 9 of last year.

Key points of the RG Kar rape case decision

Sanjay Roy was convicted of sexually abusing the doctor and killing her by strangulation. According to Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the judge found him guilty.
 
Roy was found guilty on charges that carry a minimum sentence of life in prison and a maximum penalty of the death penalty.
 
According to Section 64 of the BNS, rape carries a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum sentence of life in prison.
 
According to Section 66 (penalty for causing death or causing a victim to remain in a persistent vegetative condition), a person can be imprisoned for at least 20 years, with the possibility of being imprisoned for life, which would mean that they would be imprisoned for the rest of their natural life.

A person found guilty of murder under Section 103(1) of the BNS faces the death penalty or life in prison.
The sentence will be pronounced after Roy's statement is heard on Monday at 12:30 p.m.

Multiple people were involved in the RG Kar rape and murder case, according to Dr. Tapan Pramanik, a physician at the RG Kar Medical Hospital, and the Central Bureau of probe's (CBI) probe is "totally worthless."

"Whether the verdict is hanging to death or life in prison, I will accept it. According to the CBI inquiry, Sanjay Roy is the primary offender; however, there have been media stories claiming that 68 CCTV recordings were made, but no one other than Sanjay Roy could be identified," he stated.

He did, however, add that he would accept the verdict if it included hanging or life in jail.

"I told you the previous day the charges you were convicted against and the charges that have been proven against you," Sanjay Roy was told by the judge.

"I have not done anything, neither rape nor murder," Roy begged the judge. They're falsely accusing me. You've witnessed everything. I'm not guilty. I was tortured, as I mentioned before. They forced me to sign anything they desired.

The attorney for the CBI requested the death penalty.
