Ola and Uber, two taxi aggregators, have received notices from the Department of Consumer Affairs regarding their differential charging based on the type of mobile device.
Due to concerns about differential pricing based on the type of mobile device that customers use, the Department of Consumer Affairs has taken action against well-known taxi aggregators Ola and Uber.Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy, made the announcement on X.
The Minister wrote, "The Department of Consumer Affairs, through the CCPA, has sent notices to major cab aggregators #Ola and #Uber, seeking their responses. @jagograhakjago, in response to the earlier observation of apparent #DifferentialPricing based on the different models of mobiles (#iPhones/Android) being used."
Concerns have been raised by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) about whether the platforms are using pricing tactics that penalize customers according to the type of device they own.
According to reports, depending on whether consumers use an iPhone or an Android device, rates may differ for the same routes and times.
The notice has not yet received a response from either of the taxi aggregators.
According to a previous allegation, a social media user claimed that Uber charges Apple iPhone customers greater fees than Android users. A picture of two different cell phones with different prices for the same Uber Auto service that was posted online was used to bolster the argument. The fare on the Android handset is displayed in the image as ₹290.79, however the Apple iPhone shows a higher charge of ₹342.47 for the identical journey.
Social media user Sudhir talked about how he discovered that the device he was using affected the fare on Uber. "Two distinct phones display two different rates, despite the same pickup location, destination, and hour. I frequently ask my daughter to book my rides because I usually seem to obtain greater fares on my Uber than on her phone. Do you too experience this? What is the secret to avoiding it? He penned it.
