Elon Musk's microblogging site X, formerly known as Twitter, has adopted a "community notes" format, which Mark Zuckerberg's Meta announced on Tuesday would replace its fact-checking program.

The United States will be the first country to discontinue the third-party fact-checking program.

Facebook and Instagram's parent company, the social media behemoth, stated that it made this choice because professional fact-checkers had their own prejudices and that too much content was fact-checked.

"We're going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes similar to X (formerly Twitter), starting in the US," stated Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta, in a social media post. He went on to say that "especially in the US, fact checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they've created."

"We have seen this approach work on X, where they empower their community to decide when posts are potentially misleading and need more context," wrote Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Meta, in a blog post.
