Malaysia is seeing an increase in HMPV cases after China; the public is urged to exercise caution.

In 2024, there were 327 human metapneumovirus cases in Malaysia, a 45% increase over the previous year. In light of the rise in respiratory illnesses, health experts advise the public to practice good hygiene and adhere to safety precautions.

In recent months, human metapneumovirus incidences have significantly increased in Malaysia. The announcement coincided with China's recent reports of a dramatic increase in respiratory diseases. On Saturday, the Indian Health Ministry also called a conference to assess the growing number of cases. However, authorities maintain that there is now no need for alarm.

The Malaysian health ministry has warned that respiratory tract infections will persist and asked people to be on the lookout, according to a Strait Times story. In 2024, Malaysia recorded 327 HMPV cases, a 45% increase over the 225 cases recorded in 2023.

Additionally, people have been advised to adopt good hygiene by washing their hands with soap, using a face mask, and covering their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze. However, officials attempted to allay worries and maintained that an increase in respiratory tract infections at the start and end of the year is a normal occurrence.
