How Mumbai police used facial recognition to solve the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case

According to the police, forensic analysis confirmed that the man detained in the Saif Ali Khan attack case was the same one seen on the actor's building's CCTV footage.

By verifying that the 30-year-old Bangladeshi national detained in connection with the attack is the same individual seen on CCTV footage from the crime site, facial recognition technology has been essential in solving the stabbing case of Saif Ali Khan.

According to the police, the forensic study confirmed that the person seen on surveillance cameras at the high-rise building where Khan resided was Mohammad Shariful Islam, who had broken into the actor's Bandra home on January 16 with the intention of robbing him.

The 30-year-old Bangladeshi national caught in connection with the crime is the same guy seen in the CCTV footage from the Satguru Sharan building, where the actor stays, according to the Bandra police, who said the forensic report, which used face recognition, confirmed.

Saif Ali Khan's attack
According to reports, Islam broke into the 54-year-old actor's apartment on the 12th floor early on January 16 and stabbed him six times before escaping. Islam was taken into custody by the police on January 19 in Thane, and following a comprehensive investigation, it was determined that forensic examination of tangible evidence and facial recognition tests from CCTV footage connected him to the murder.

Islam was placed on judicial remand after a Bandra magistrate's court on Wednesday declined to prolong his police detention. The judge decided that no recent events warranted additional police detention. "At least at this stage, further police custody is not justified," said Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Komal Sing Rajput, who also advised the police that they might request custody within the allotted time if new information became available.

Citing the necessity to look into Islam's financial dealings and unlawful entry into India, the police had asked for an extension of incarceration. In order to obtain pertinent information, a team had also been sent to Kolkata. Authorities are still investigating claims that Islam changed his name from Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad to "Bijoy Das" after arriving in India.

Five days after the attack, Saif Ali Khan was released from the hospital after undergoing emergency surgery. Khan is still recuperating from his wounds, but he has not yet spoken out about the incident
