After entering India illegally and assuming the alias Bijoy Das, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad was imprisoned for assaulting Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan.
One of the key pieces of information that ultimately assisted the Mumbai Police in apprehending Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who is accused of attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra home on January 16, was a phone payment.Earlier on Sunday, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, who had entered India illegally and assumed the identity Bijoy Das, was taken into custody from the nearby city of Thane.
According to The Indian Express, which cited people connected to the matter, Mohammad Shariful paid for a paratha and a bottle of water from a stand close to Century Mill in Worli using UPI through Google Pay or GPay.
According to the article, the accused's mobile number was obtained by police through the UPI payment, and they were able to follow it to Thane, where other information pointed to a dense cluster of mangroves next to a labor camp.
About 100 police officers quickly began searching the area.
"The police crew had nearly left the area after looking there when they made the decision to check again. The light from one of the candles told them that there was a person asleep on the ground as they looked again. The individual stood up and began to run as an officer approached. The Indian Express said, quoting the sources, "He was soon apprehended and overpowered."
According to a police officer cited by the news agency PTI, Mohammad Shariful slept at a bus station and remained in Bandra until 7am on the day of the event. It also stated that early on January 16, Mohammad Shariful had broken into the Bollywood star's residence in the posh Bandra Satguru Sharan complex with the purpose to steal.
According to the sources who spoke to IE, "the accused told us during initial questioning that after seeing his images being flashed on TV and YouTube, he got scared and fled to Thane because he had worked in a bar there and knew the area."
After following CCTV footage from the Bandra railway station and locating the culprit at a store near the Dadar station where he purchased a mobile cover, the police earlier started to close in on him. However, he paid here in cash. He later relocated to Kabutarkhana before moving to Worli, according to sources.
Mohammad Shariful was caught by police surveillance loitering at a stall close to Century Mill, where he repeatedly engaged with Naveen Ekka, the stall proprietor.

Ekka, who was lodging close to Koliwada, became the focus of the investigation. Teams of police were sent to search the area. They located Ekka's home at Janata Colony, where he shared quarters with other employees. But when the police got there, the house was locked, so they called Rajnarajayan Prajapati, the landlord. While Vinod, Prajapati's son, verified that Ekka was a tenant and gave his phone number, he was unable to identify the suspect.
Ekka verified that the suspect used Google Pay to make a payment. His mobile number was discovered by authorities as a result, and this marked a significant turning point in the case.
"The accused dozed off at a bus stop."Following the event, he slept until 7 a.m. on January 16 at a bus stop close to Patwardhan Garden in Bandra West. Later on, he boarded a train and reached Worli (in central Mumbai)," an unnamed official told PTI.
