Due to rejected checks, Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hasan is under arrest warrant; connections to Sheikh Hasina incite ire

Due to returned checks, a Dhaka court issued an arrest order for cricket player Shakib Al Hasan. Because of safety concerns after political instability, he has not gone back to Bangladesh. A farm official was the subject of another warrant. Shakib resides in the United States and is currently prohibited from bowling.

Due to two returned checks, a Dhaka court on Sunday issued an arrest order for Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hasan. Since the Sheikh Hasina administration collapsed in August 2024, the former Awami League MP has been the subject of intense inquiry. In recent months, he has also been the focus of public ire due to his ties to the ousted leader. Hasan was one of several people under investigation for murder in connection with a violent police crackdown on demonstrators during the revolt.

When the government of Bangladesh fell apart last year, Hasan was participating in a domestic Twenty20 cricket tournament in Canada. Because he fears for his life, he has not yet returned to the nation. Reports state that Hasan had not shown up for court as previously ordered in connection with a matter involving more than $300,000 in returned checks.

According to a court official who spoke to media on Sunday, "Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the arrest warrant asking police to submit a report on the execution of the order on March 24."

He is frequently regarded as Bangladesh's best cricketer. Late last year, he played his final Test match against India at Kanpur. His final outing in Bangladeshi colors was scheduled for the Champions Trophy in Dubai, but earlier this week he was left off the roster.

After he was reported for a questionable bowling motion in England last year, his job had become untenable. Following a second review of his performance last month, the 37-year-old is still barred from bowling in all forms. The star cricket player has already resigned from test cricket, and the Champions Trophy rejection seems to have ended his 50-overs career.

International Finance Investment and Commerce (IFIC) Bank initiated a lawsuit against the cricket player. The cricketer-turned-businessman and three other firm leaders were the targets of a lawsuit filed on December 24 after the IFIC Bank submitted a legal notice over the failed checks earlier in October of last year.

Following a hearing, the judge granted bail to two of the farm officials who dutifully turned themselves in to the court today. In 2016, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm, a crab farm in southwestern Satkhira, was founded by Shakib, the former captain of the Bangladeshi cricket team. According to reports, the business has not operated since 2021.
