Debate surrounding the 90-hour workweek: The Economic Survey 2025 shows that India is tied with Germany, Vietnam, and the UK in terms of average weekly working hours.

Debate over a 90-hour workweek: In terms of the average weekly working hours at the greatest level of 48 hours, India is tied with Germany, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented on Friday, January 31 ahead of the Union Budget 2025.

With an average of 45 hours per week, Malaysia comes in second place, followed by Singapore in third place with an average of 44 hours. Additionally, at 40 hours per week, the USA, South Korea, Japan, and Indonesia were tied.

S N Subrahmanyan, the chairman of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), started an online discussion earlier this month by arguing for a 90-hour workweek and even suggesting that workers should forgo Sundays.

On social media, a video of Subrahmanyan urging employees to put in 90 hours a week if they need "to be on top of the world" has generated intense discussion. The video rekindled the controversy over work-life balance that surrounded Infosys founder Narayan Murthy's demands for a 70-hour workweek the previous year.
