The accused is a Bangladeshi national who changed his identity to Vijay Das and was staying in India illegally, according to Mumbai police looking into the matter.
In order to recreate the murder scene, the Mumbai Police investigating the stabbing case of Saif Ali Khan brought the accused, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, to the actor's Bandra residence on Tuesday morning. According to news agency PTI, he was also brought to the Bandra train station to follow suit.On Thursday, the intruder repeatedly stabbed Saif Ali Khan inside his apartment in the posh Satguru Sharan building in Bandra, requiring surgery. After a five-hour operation, the actor's doctors reported that he was "recovering well."
Mumbai Police investigation thus far
The accused is a Bangladeshi national who changed his name to Vijay Das and was staying in India illegally, according to the Mumbai Police investigating the case. He is thought to have been living in Mumbai for more than five months, making ends meet by taking on odd jobs and working for a housekeeping service.
"He requested his brother's school living certificate over the phone. The certificate was sent to Fakir's cell phone by his brother. "This document provides compelling proof that he is a citizen of Bangladesh," the officer continued.
As part of their investigation, police visited the actor's residence on Monday and took multiple fingerprints. Fingerprints were discovered at multiple locations, including the duct shaft, the ladder the culprit reportedly used to enter from the duct, and the bathroom window from where he is thought to have entered and exited, an official told PTI.
According to police, the assailant stabbed Saif Ali Khan inside his house during an attempted break-in and then spent two hours hiding in his garden. According to an official who cited the early inquiry, "he was afraid of getting caught."
Although the official did not verify whether the assailant was aware that Khan was residing on the top levels of the Bandra property, he stated that the accused intended to steal "big money" from the structure.
The offender was placed under police detention for five days on Sunday by the Bandra metropolitan magistrate's court.
