"Under rules implemented for the 97th Academy Awards year, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue," the Academy said in a press release outlining the eligibility requirements for consideration in the general entry categories. The duration of feature films must be greater than forty minutes.
More information
It should be mentioned that meeting the requirements does not guarantee an Oscar nomination. Any feature film that wants to be nominated must go through a process where members of the corresponding branch—the director's branch, the editor's branch, and the actor's branch—decide the picture's possibilities. A title in a certain category can only be nominated and voted for by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members. In order to ensure a process of elimination, the voting body uses the preferential vote for the Best Picture category, ranking the Best Picture nominees from 1 to 10.
This year, the voting period will begin on January 8 and go through January 12. On Friday, January 17, the 2025 Oscar nominations will be announced. The Dolby Theatre will host the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2.
