Mahindra praised Koneru as "an Indian Queen" in an article on X.The board is ruled by an Indian queen. We appreciate you making us so proud, @humpy_koneru. An Important Win
On December 29, Koneru defeated Irene Sukandar of Indonesia in New York to win her second World Rapid Chess Championship title. At Georgia in 2019, she achieved her first victory. According to a PTI report, she is only the second player after Ju Wenjun of China to win the title more than thrice.
The 37-year-old told reporters she is "very happy" and that her triumph was "unexpected." She finished the event with 8.5 out of 11 points.
"I feel so joyful and excited. Actually, I anticipated that today would be really difficult, akin to a tie-break. However, it was a tense moment for me because I didn't know until the arbiter informed me after the game was over. This comes as a big surprise because I've been having a lot of trouble this year and have had terrible tournament results where I finished last. Thus, this was unexpected," she stated.
"I think I wasn't thinking about the title after the first round loss, but things worked out well, especially yesterday when I won four straight games," she continued.
In chess, Team India is dominating.
Her triumph follows D Gukesh's World Championship victory in Singapore over China's Ding Liren. India had previously won its first-ever gold medals in the Open and Women's divisions at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September.
Her triumph, according to Humpy, will now encourage other Indians to play chess. It's about time for India, in my opinion. In the rapid event, I won the second world title, and Gukesh is also the current world champion. Therefore, I believe this will inspire many young people to pursue professional chess," she stated.
