Trump-Trudeau dinner meeting: Trump told Trudeau that he wants to see progress on illegal immigration from Canada into the United States before January 20.Trump-Trudeau Meeting: Last Friday, US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada due to the North American nation's failure to stop the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Trump over dinner in Florida.
Many people laughed during the nearly three-hour unscheduled discussion at Mar-a-Lago, and Trump made it clear that he expects the matter to be resolved by January 20 of next year, when he retakes the presidency, according to Fox News.
Trump Makes Jokes About Canada's Inclusion in the US
Trump was allegedly informed by Trudeau over the dinner that the additional tariffs would "kill the Canadian economy."
According to Fox News, which cited sources, Trump's response to this was that perhaps Canada could become the 51st state in the United States.
The American news station reported that tariffs, border security, and trade deficits were the primary topics of conversation between the two leaders.
According to two persons at the table who overheard the talk, Fox News claimed that although Trump was friendly and hospitable, he was "very direct" about what he needed from Canada as a partner to the North of the US.
Trump and Trudeau Have a Tough Conversation About Illegal Immigration
As the conversation went on, Trump charged that Trudeau had failed to control the US-Canada border and had let the entry of illegal migrants and drugs from more than 70 nations. As he discussed the US trade gap with Canada, which he said exceeded $100 billion, the US president-elect became increasingly heated.
On his first day in office, Trump made it clear to Trudeau that he would impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods if Canada could not resolve its border problems and trade deficit.
In reaction, Trudeau stated that Trump could not impose the tariff because it would destroy the Canadian economy.
"So your nation cannot exist unless it is stealing $100 billion from the United States?" Fox News reported that Trump responded.
According to Fox News, which cited sources, Trump then suggested to Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state in the United States, which made the prime minister of Canada giggle uncomfortably.
Trump went on to say that while he could still be the governor of the 51st state, the title of prime minister is a better one.
The attendees laughed when someone at the table made a joke about Canada being a liberal state. Trump went on to say that Canada might possibly become two states: a liberal state and a conservative state.
According to Fox News, he advised Trudeau that perhaps Canada might think about joining the US as a state or two and appointing Trudeau as governor if he was unable to satisfy US demands without abusing trade.
