Due to an undisclosed technical problem, American Airlines halted all of its flights in the United States on Tuesday, the airline said.
The travel plans of thousands of passengers scheduled to depart on Christmas Eve were disrupted on Tuesday when American Airlines halted all of its flights in the United States owing to an unidentified technical issue, the airline said in a regulatory notice. The firm has not provided an explanation for the flight cancellations. Many travelers were reporting on social media that their planes were being returned to the gate after becoming stranded on the runway at different airports.
The firm responded to a question from a stranded flier on X by saying, "An estimated timeframe has not been provided, but they're trying to fix it in the shortest possible time."
Prior to the bell, the carrier's stock was down 3.8%. Without providing an explanation, a notification on the website of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration simply stated that the company had made a nationwide groundstop request.
By 7:30 a.m. ET, American had not released a formal statement on social media and was just answering comments left by a large number of users on Facebook, Bluesky, and X.
"Hey, @AmericanAir, please let us know if we should return home. One user commented, "Please don't make us wait for hours in the airport."
American offers thousands of daily flights to over 350 locations across 60 countries.
The grounding occurs months after a worldwide tech failure that affected airlines was linked to a software bug at cybersecurity company CrowdStrike and Microsoft's Azure cloud platform.
Further feedback from the U.S. FAA was not immediately available.
Two years ago, during the holidays, Southwest Airlines had a system failure that left two million customers stranded and 16,900 flights cancelled. In the end, it was hit with the biggest civil penalty ever for a travel disruption: $140 million.
