The BCCI's replacement for Jay Shah: On THIS day, the Indian Cricket Board will elect a new secretary; review potential candidates.

The BCCI's replacement for Jay Shah

Jay Shah, a former secretary of the BCCI, became the chairman of the International Cricket Council on December 1, 2024. In 2019, Shah was chosen to serve as the secretary of the BCCI.

According to a PTI report, the BCCI's Special General Meeting (SGM) on January 12 will elect the organization's successor to former secretary Jay Shah. Following the swearing-in of BJP member Ashish Shelar as a cabinet minister in the newly established Maharashtra government, a new treasurer will also be chosen in addition to the new secretary.

Shah was chosen chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and served at the BCCI for five years starting in 2019. On December 1, 2024, he took up his position at the ICC. At 36, Shah made history by becoming the youngest person to chair the International Cricket Council (ICC). Additionally, he is the fifth Indian to lead the international sports organization.

The BCCI constitution states that any open position must be filled by holding an SGM within 45 days. A state association president told PTI, "Yes, state units received a notification regarding the date of the SGM, which is January 12 at the BCCI headquarters, following the Apex Council Meeting on Thursday."

One person cannot hold two jobs, according to the Lodha Committee reforms that the Supreme Court has approved. Similarly, Shah and Shelar gave up their posts as needed. While the treasurer's post is unfilled, Devajit Saikia of Assam is now serving as the BCCI's acting secretary.

Who will take Jay Shah's place, Anil Patel or Rohan Jaitley?

The names of Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel and Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley began to circulate shortly after the announcement of Shah's selection as ICC chairman. But according to a News18 report, Patel is probably the underdog for the job.

The Apex Council is being asked to endorse the nomination of Achal Kumar Jyoti, the former Chief Election Commissioner of India, as the Electoral Officer to supervise BCCI elections at the Special General Meeting, according to a BCCI document that PTI has.

From July 2017 to January 2018, Jyoti, a 71-year-old retired Gujarat cadre IAS official from the 1975 batch, was India's chief election commissioner.
