One of the survivors, Gautam Gupta, 25, was on the ferry when the catastrophe happened. On December 18, 2024, a passenger ferry, the Neelkamal, was struck off the coast of Mumbai by an unruly Indian Navy speedboat. Three navy members were among the at least 13 persons died in the tragedy, while numerous others were injured. The boat was transporting about 110 passengers to the Elephanta Caves, one of the most popular tourist attractions, when the disaster happened at around 4 PM close to Butcher Island.
One of the survivors, Gautam Gupta, 20, was on the ferry when he took a video of the moments before the disaster. He initially believed the Navy speedboat was doing water tricks. He told The Times of India that he and other passengers on his ferry were able to capture the speedboat approaching the ship on camera immediately prior to the crash.
One of the speedboat's passengers was thrown into the air by the collision's extreme energy, and he landed on the deck next to him without moving. "To my utter disbelief and shock... his motionless body was badly mutilated," Gupta said seeing this horrifying scene.
Three navy soldiers and ten civilians were killed in the tragedy. Eleven boats and four helicopters were sent by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard to rescue people who were stuck in the water as soon as the incident occurred. Nearly 101 people have reportedly been rescued from the overturned ship.
According to the story, Gupta and his cousin Rinta Gupta are being treated for their wounds at St George's Hospital, while his aunt has not yet been located. Following the accident, survivors have reported a chaotic scene in which numerous passengers screamed for assistance as they fought to get off of the sinking ship.
The families of those killed in this tragedy would receive an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh, according to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He added that an inquiry is underway to ascertain what caused the incident and what safety precautions were in place at the time. The Navy has established a board of inquiry to thoroughly examine all of the circumstances that led to this accident.
