Rohit Sharma said that his team's dismal performance against Australia in Melbourne led to a humiliating loss in the fourth test.
India's chances of winning another Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Australian soil have been dashed by yet another spectacular batting collapse. With a Test remaining, Australia, captained by Pat Cummins, has taken a 2-1 lead, putting them in danger of losing the series for the first time since 2014. Before Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant came together to turn around the innings and increase the likelihood of a draw, India, who were chasing 340, had already lost their top three for very little. However, Travis Head, a part-time employee, assaulted Pant to dislodge him shortly after the third session began, causing a collapse from which there was no recovery.Australia won the Boxing Day Test by 184 runs on the fifth and last day after India was dismissed for 155 in 79.1 overs. Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, described the performance as "mentally disturbing."
In Melbourne, Rohit told reporters, "It is mentally disturbing when you can't do what you have come to do." It is quite disheartening. There are methods to win games, and we were unable to figure out how to win this one. We wanted to fight to the very end, but we were unable to do so.
"Australia scored 90 points for six." Even though we are aware that times can be difficult, we want to play tough cricket. However, we weren't sufficient. Returning to my room, I considered what more we could have done together. They put up a fierce fight, particularly that last-wicket partnership, which likely cost us the game there, but we gave it our all," he continued.
The team was playing with a positive mindset to hunt it down, Rohit remarked, even if the aim might have been daunting. But when the top-order failed once more, things got really tough.
"We were aware that 340 wouldn't be simple. For the past two sessions, we have attempted to establish a platform and hold onto wickets, but they bowled perfectly as well. We wanted to go for the target, but we didn’t set the platform from our side," Rohit said.
The contest's bright spots for India were Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal scored 82 and 84 runs in the two innings, while Bumrah claimed nine wickets during the game. However, Reddy's tenacious century in the opening innings, which kept India in the match, showed promise.
