In 2024, the mutual fund sector witnessed strong asset growth, significant inflows, and an increase in the use of Systematic investing Plans (SIPs) as an investing vehicle. Mutual funds remain a popular choice for long-term wealth accumulation in the face of a booming market and growing investor confidence.The mutual fund industry's assets under management (AUM) grew significantly in 2024. The AUM increased by 35.5% from Rs 50.24 lakh crore in 2023 to Rs 68.08 lakh crore by November.
About 5.13 crore folios were drawn to open-ended mutual funds in 2024, increasing the total number of folios to 22.02 crore by November from 16.89 crore in January. According to monthly data published by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), 174 new open-ended plans were introduced in 2024, bringing the total number of schemes from 1,378 in January to 1,552 in November.
Funds for equity
The best-performing equity funds in 2024 were thematic, small-cap, and mid-cap funds. Sectoral expansion and heightened interest from retail investors are responsible for this performance, which has produced remarkable returns.
With an increase of almost 3.76 crore, equities mutual funds saw the biggest growth in folios in 2024. As of November 30, there were 15.41 crore total folios, up from 11.64 crore in January. Throughout the year, 54 additional plans were launched, increasing the overall number of equity schemes to 481 as of November.
Approximately 1.28 crore new folios were added to sectoral and thematic funds in 2024, bringing the total count to 2.89 crore in November from 1.61 crore in January.
This expansion in the categories of equity mutual funds is a result of the introduction of 40 new sectoral and theme schemes in the current calendar year. Dividend yield funds added 3.20 lakh folios in 2024, after mid-cap and small-cap funds experienced increases of 56.40 lakh and 56.24 lakh folios, respectively. During the same time period, focused funds added the fewest folios—roughly 54,217.
The expansion of SIPs
Contributions to SIPs increased by 44% from ₹17,610 crore in December 2023 to an astounding Rs 25,320 crore each month as of November 2024.

The total number of folios in Hybrid Mutual Funds increased by 19.42 lakh in 2024, from 1.31 crore in January to 1.50 crore as of November 2024. Eleven new schemes were also added to this category.
Multi Asset Allocation Funds grew by 9.46 lakh folios in 2024, reaching a total of 27.68 lakh folios throughout the six hybrid categories. During the same time period, Aggressive Hybrid Funds added 3.17 lakh folios, while Dynamic Asset Allocation/Balanced Advantage Funds experienced a growth of 5.09 lakh folios.
