Latest from the Middle East: Hours after attacks on Yemen's airport, Houthi militants launch a missile into Israel.

Hours after a barrage of Israeli airstrikes struck Yemen's main airport just as the director-general of the World Health Organization was ready to board a flight there, Houthi rebels in Yemen launched a missile at Israel early on Friday.

More than 45,000 Palestinians have been murdered in Israel's war in Gaza, with over half of them being women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not separate militants from civilians when calculating the death toll.

Hamas started the conflict on October 7, 2023, when it attacked southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking 250 hostage to Palestinian militants. There are currently over 100 captives in custody in Gaza, but only two-thirds are believed to still be alive.

Israel said that its strikes were directed against the Houthi rebels' infrastructure in Yemen as payback for the rebels' continuous missile barrages toward central Israel in recent days.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the chief of the World Health Organization, was getting ready to board a neighboring plane when the strikes on the airport occurred. A U.N. colleague hurt in the strike had surgery and was in stable condition, but he hasn't been removed from Yemen yet, Ghebreyesus said on X on Friday. Near the Janta crossing on the Syrian-Lebanese border, approximately 9 kilometers north of Qousaya, the Israeli military reported that its air force had hit “infrastructure used to smuggle weapons via Syria” to Hezbollah. Israeli troops were accused by the Lebanese army on Thursday of violating the truce by intruding into southern Lebanon. Roads in Wadi Al-Hujayr were blocked by earth obstacles built by Israeli bulldozers.

Later on Thursday, the Lebanese army said that Israeli forces had withdrawn after the ceasefire oversight committee intervened, and that Lebanese soldiers had taken down the obstacles to allow the route to reopen in the region.

In order for Lebanese troops to progressively move south of the Litani River, Hezbollah and Israeli forces must leave southern Lebanon within 60 days of the truce, which was mediated by the United States and put an end to the 14-month conflict.
