Kiran Rao Responds To The Oscars 2025 Shortlist Not Including Laapataa Ladies

Laapataa Ladies by Kiran Rao won numerous accolades from critics and was adored by viewers throughout. The talented filmmaker responds to her film's exclusion from the 2025 Academy Awards shortlist.

New Delhi: Last year, Kiran Rao's comedy-drama Laapataa Ladies won praise from all over the world for its superb acting and narrative. The picture has been praised by critics and viewers ever since it came out, and they still do.

When Rao's film was selected as India's official submission to the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, the entire globe celebrated.

Unfortunately, the movie did not make the shortlist, which was revealed yesterday. Although there were some opposing viewpoints, the decision caused a nationwide wave of dismay.

Laapataa Ladies enjoyed a wild ride at a number of international film festivals when it was released last year, including the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne and the 48th Toronto International Film Festival 2023, where it won Best Film (Critics' Choice).

Kiran Rao, the director, also became upset and expressed his feelings. The film's official Instagram page shared an emotional message about it missing out on this year's Oscars. The filmmaker quickly reposted the identical post with a heart emoji.

The Laapataa Ladies team expressed their gratitude for the tremendous love and support the movie has received.

An excerpt from the lengthy article said, "We are grateful to the FFI jury and Academy members for their consideration of our picture. It is an honor in and of itself to be a part of this esteemed process with some of the best films from around the globe. We sincerely appreciate the love and support that our film has received from viewers around.

Despite the sadness caused by this revelation, Shahana Goswami's Hindi-language film Santosh managed to make it to the Oscar shortlist. The movie is the UK's submission for the category of documentary short films.
