On Tuesday, an Army truck carrying five soldiers in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, went off the road and fell into a 300-foot chasm, killing five of them and injuring five others, officials said.According to officials, an Army vehicle, one of six in a convoy, was traveling to Banoi in the district when the accident happened in the Gharoa area at approximately 5:20 p.m.
"All ranks of #WhiteKnightCorps extend their deepest condolences on the tragic loss of five brave soldiers in a vehicle accident during operational duty in the #Poonch sector," the 16 Corps, Indian Army, wrote on X.
According to a defense spokeswoman, "possibly the driver lost control at the turn of the road" is one theory for the accident's cause, now under investigation. The Army has denied that the incident was caused by terrorist activity.
The Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police have quick action squads on the scene.
"Deeply anguished by the terrible news of the martyrdom of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in a vehicle tragedy in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir," Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on X.
"We send our deepest sympathies to our courageous heroes' families. We honor their unselfish devotion to the country and their sacrifice. We wish the injured a quick and full recovery, and our thoughts are with them," he stated.
The news of the soldiers' deaths is heartbreaking, according to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
"I offer my sincere condolences to the martyrs and wish the wounded warriors a quick recovery. Mr. Gandhi expressed his sincere sympathies to the families of the deceased.
