Ahead of Monday's farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march towards the Parliament complex, traffic has been particularly bad in some areas of Delhi and Noida. What do the farmers want?
Under the aegis of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), the farmers have been demonstrating against the Center on a number of issues, including the assurance of benefits and compensation under the recently passed agricultural legislation. Since February, they have set a camp at the Punjab-Haryana border crossings of Shambhu and Khanauri.
Four times the market rate compensation and twenty percent plots on land acquired after January 1, 2014, employment and rehabilitation benefits for the children of landless farmers, government orders on the issues passed by the High Power Committee, proper settlement of the populated areas, and the allocation of ten percent plots and sixty-seven percent increased compensation under the old acquisition law are the five main demands of the farmers.
"We are prepared to march in the direction of Delhi. Our march towards Delhi will begin in Noida, beneath the Maha Maya flyover. We will all arrive at the Parliament complex at noon and demand our benefits and remuneration in accordance with the new rules," BKP leader Sukhbir Khalifa stated.
