Musk, the richest man in the world and the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, was a staunch backer of Trump's campaign, contributing funds to door-knocking and speaking at his rallies.
According to data from organization OpenSecrets, his financial support—which has given him a cost-cutting adviser role in Trump's new government—surpassed spending by any single political donor since at least 2010.
How Much Was Spent by Musk?
According to the Washington Post, Musk spent more money this election season than Tim Mellon, a Trump supporter and former top fundraiser who contributed close to $200 million.
According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission late Thursday, Musk gave $238 million to America PAC, a political action group he established in favor of Trump.
The RBG PAC, which utilized advertising to temper Trump's extreme stance on the crucial voter issue of abortion, received an additional $20 million.
Since Trump won the election in November, Musk has been his constant aide, asking him to Texas to witness a rocket launch by his SpaceX company.
Vivek Ramaswamy, a political buddy and South African-born tycoon, has been appointed by Trump to lead the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. The two have pledged to implement billions of dollars in government budget cutbacks through the department.
However, Musk's new role also raises questions regarding conflict of interest, given that his companies all have varied degrees of relationships with both foreign and US governments.
Several individuals linked to Musk have been nominated by the president-elect for positions in his government, including investor David Sacks as the alleged czar for AI and cryptocurrency.
In the meantime, US space agency NASA was led by wealthy astronaut Jared Isaacman, who has worked with Musk's SpaceX.
