Death of Manmohan Singh: Government announces seven-day mourning; Saturday is the former prime minister's last ceremony

On Thursday evening, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was taken in serious condition to AIIMS Delhi. The hospital subsequently reported his death.

One of India's best economists and a former prime minister, Manmohan Singh, died Thursday night at the age of 92 at AIIMS Delhi.

Manmohan Singh, who started his career in the Indian government in 1971 as an economic counselor in the ministry of commerce, had been dealing with health problems for a while.

Manmohan Singh, who was born in Punjab in 1932, was India's prime minister twice, from 2004 to 2014. After serving in the Rajya Sabha for 33 years, he announced his retirement earlier this year.

Leaders from around the world, including former US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as the general public, lamented Singh's passing.

Manmohan Singh, former prime minister, dies

After suddenly losing consciousness at home on Thursday night, former prime minister Manmohan Singh was taken to AIIMS Delhi. He was sent to the hospital's emergency room in critical condition. He was unable to be revived, though, and AIIMS confirmed in a statement that he passed away at 9:51 p.m. on December 26.

India's "most distinguished leaders" passed away, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented the ascent of Manmohan Singh from impoverished beginnings to a reputable position as an economist. Recalling Singh's remarks, PM Modi remarked, "His humility and wisdom were always visible." PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid their farewell tributes at Singh's home later that day.

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed his condolences for the loss of his "mentor and guide." Rahul claimed that millions of admirers of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would "remember him with the utmost pride" in his post on X. Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among the other Congress leaders who expressed their sorrow over the former prime minister's passing.

Manmohan Singh's "service to the nation, his unblemished political life, and his utmost humility" would always be remembered, according to President Droupadi Murmu, who also noted that the country has suffered a significant loss in his departure.

The country's industrialists, such as Harsh Goenka and Gautam Adani, expressed their sorrow over Manmohan Singh's passing. Singh's "pivotal role" in the 1991 reforms that changed India and opened its doors to the globe will always be remembered by history, according to a post on X by Adani. The former prime minister was characterized as a "rare leader who spoke softly but achieved monumental strides through his actions" by the head of the Adani Group. Singh was also referred to as a "true statesman" and "an architect of economic reforms" by Harsh Goenka, the chairman of RPG Enterprise.

State chief ministers also expressed their sorrow over the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, describing him as a national leader and esteemed economist whose passing is a genuine loss to India. In the meantime, Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, announced a seven-day state mourning in honor of Manmohan Singh.

Celebrities from around the world also lamented Dr. Manmohan Singh's passing. In a post on X, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai claimed that India has lost "one of its most illustrious sons." Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives, claimed that he considered the former prime minister to be a "benevolent father figure" and a close friend of the Maldives.

On Thursday, the Congress declared that all official party events, including its foundation day festivities, would be canceled for the following seven days in observance of the former prime minister. The grand old party also called off Friday's "Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally" in Belgaum, Karnataka. According to Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, the party's programs will all restart on January 3, 2025.

In remembrance of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Union government announced a seven-day period of mourning. The National Flag will be flying at half mast throughout India during this time, and there won't be any official entertainment for seven days. Additionally, all Indian High Commissions and missions overseas have been asked to fly the half-mask. To honor the "architect of India's economic reforms," the Cabinet will convene on Friday at 11 a.m.
