Cyclone Fengal LIVE updates: Puducherry and Tamil Nadu continue to see severe rains as the depression weakens and shifts west-northwest

Cyclone Fengal LIVE updates: Depression weakens, moves west-northwest; heavy rainfall continues in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

Many districts in Tamil Nadu have declared holidays, while Telangana, Karnataka, is under a yellow alert.

The depression, which was the remnant of the cyclonic storm "FENGAL," traveled almost westward over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, according to the IMD on Monday, December 2, 2024. At 5:30 a.m., it diminished into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over north interior Tamil Nadu.

Around December 3, the remaining low pressure region is expected to form over the southeast and adjacent east-central Arabian Sea off the shores of north Kerala and Karnataka.

As storm Fengal continued to produce a lot of rain, several districts in Tamil Nadu announced a holiday for schools. While Salem, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupatur, Vellore, and Ranipet districts declared a holiday for only schools on this day, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Krishnagiri districts declared a holiday for all schools and colleges.

The Army stepped in to remove stranded people in submerged streets as Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry on November 30, weakened on Sunday but caused a torrential downpour that paralyzed the union territory. Older people remembered that the Union Territory had not seen such a ferocity of nature in the previous thirty years.

Additionally, Telangana's Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Jangaon districts are under a yellow alert for December 2 according to the IMD.

Tamil Nadu: Overwhelmed by flood rage The Villupuram

Villupuram is still suffering from unheard-of levels of floods.

The town of Villupuram, as well as neighboring towns and villages, have been hardest hit by the torrential rains, and low-lying areas have been flooded.

Villupuram's excellent connectivity makes it simple to travel between the central and southern regions of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, and other northern sections of the state. The northern coastal town of Cuddalore was severely affected, and the River Thenpennai was in spate.

The water also overtook the western districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. People were shocked when numerous vehicles, including automobiles and vans, were dragged from a road into low-lying areas during floods in Krishnagiri that had not occurred in the previous two to three decades. Road connections between Uthangarai and Tiruvannamalai and Krishnagiri has been affected due to heavy inundation.

Puducherry: The government is evaluating the cyclone's effects and will report back to the center. Rangasamy, CM
According to Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, a thorough report evaluating the extent of the Cyclone Fengal's destruction is now being produced and will be forwarded to the Center in order to request relief.

According to a release from the Puducherry Home Minister A Namassivayam, all schools and colleges in the Karaikal and Puducherry areas remained closed on Monday.

Ten districts in Telangana are under a thunderstorm alert.
In anticipation of thunderstorms on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow advisory for ten Telangana districts.

An IMD advisory states that isolated areas in the districts of Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Jangaon are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusts.

Cyclone Fengal's depression weakens and shifts west-northwest, as Tamil Nadu and Puducherry continue to see heavy rains.

The depression, a relic of Cyclonic Storm Fengal over the north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, traveled west-northwestward at a speed of 7 km/h over the last six hours, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). It was centered around 11:30 pm on Sunday, December 1.

Kerala: Four districts are under an orange alert
Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad are the four districts under an orange alert, which warns of extremely heavy rainfall; Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam are under a yellow alert, which predicts isolated severe rains.

The cyclone that made landfall on Sunday stayed almost motionless over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the majority of the day, according to a weather advisory released by the IMD. According to the advisory, it is expected to travel extremely slowly westward and gradually weaken into a deep depression over Puducherry and north coastal Tamil Nadu during the course of the next six hours.

Kerala: Four districts are under a red alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rains in four districts. Because of the effects of the cyclonic storm Fengal that passed over the beaches of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Saturday night, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur are expected to see extremely severe rains.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted severe rainfall in four districts of Kerala, hence the Ernakulam Vyttila bus stop would be closed on Monday. These are under a red alert, and five districts are under an orange warning.

Karnataka: Chamarajanagar's schools and colleges are closed

Due to the rains, Chamarajanagar Shilpa Nag, the district's deputy commissioner, has declared that all schools and colleges will be closed on December 2nd, with the exception of degree colleges that were conducting exams.

Karnataka is expected to have more rain; certain areas are under a yellow alert.
