In an internal all-hands meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company has reduced manager and vice president positions by 10% as part of its year-long drive for efficiency.

According to Business Insider, which quoted two employees who heard the comments, the tech giant has implemented these changes during the previous two years in an effort to streamline the business and increase efficiency. According to one of the aforementioned individuals, Pichai stated that the efficiency push involved a 10% cut in managers, directors, and vice presidents.

According to the story, which cited a Google official, some of the jobs in the 10% number were eliminated, while others were converted to individual contributor roles.

Google has been on an efficiency drive for the past two years. Pichai said earlier in September 2022 that he wanted Google to increase its efficiency by 20%. By January of the following year, Google had laid off 12,000 employees.

It may be significant that Google's efficiency drive coincides with the recent explosion in artificial intelligence. Furthermore, it's arguable that Open AI and other participants in this market may have had an effect on Google's search operations.

Google has integrated generative AI characteristics into its core business to compete in the rapidly changing AI market. It has introduced a number of new AI capabilities, such as a new set of Gemini models, which includes a "reasoning" model that illustrates its thought process, and a new AI video generator to rival OpenAI's early testing.

Furthermore, Pichai explained the definition of "Googleyness" during the all-hands meeting, pointing out that the team must refresh the current Google.

As part of cost-cutting measures for the reorganization process, Google laid off 200 employees from its "core team" in May 2024 and moved some of those positions abroad, according to internal sources cited by CNBC. The California engineering team lost over fifty jobs. The "technical foundation behind the company's flagship products" is developed by the core team using its worldwide IT infrastructure and online user safety.
