After Steve Smith got his 34th test century in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, Virat Kohli approached the Australian batsman to offer his congratulations.
Even though Virat Kohli stole the show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground at the beginning of the Boxing Day Test for all the wrong reasons, he had a strong start to Day 2. On Friday, Kohli made a wonderful gesture for Australia's star batsman, Steve Smith, a day after receiving harsh criticism from cricket fans and past players for his shoulder barge on 19-year-old Australian debutant Sam Konstas. Kohli began cheering as soon as Smith hit Nitish Kumar Reddy through the covers for a boundary to reach his 34th Test century. The former captain of India waited for Smith with patience.Smith and Kohli have a lengthy history together. Since the two began competing at the U19 level in the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia, their relationship has only gotten closer. The 2019 ICC Fair Play award went to Kohli for his gesture for Smith during the ODI World Cup, urging the spectators not to jeer the Australian batsman. Smith, on the other hand, has consistently regarded Kohli as one of the best all-format bowlers in history.
Not only did Kohli get a 20% fine and a demerit point for violating the ICC's Code of Conduct, but Smith's 34th Test ton tied Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Younis Khan, and Mahela Jayawardene. KL Rahul was spotted cheering the innings as well.
Smith also became the batter with the most hundreds in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, surpassing even Virat Kohli. In addition to being the most by any hitter, this was Kohli's eleventh Test century against India.
After declaring his comeback to form with a century in the third Test in Brisbane, the former captain of Australia continued to show his affection for the MCG by scoring his sixth Test century there.
When Smith ran down the track and inside-edged the ball onto his pads, the ball miraculously returned to the stumps, and he was unlucky to be removed for 140. In the crucial fourth Test of this series, however, Australia chose to bat first and his knock had made sure they posted a dominant first total of 474.
India lost skipper Rohit Sharma early in the reply, and Pat Cummins placed the tourists under a lot of pressure by clean bowling KL Rahul at the stroke of tea.
