Elon Musk contributed more than $250 million to Donald Trump's campaign, including $20 million to a Ruth Bader Ginsburg-named political action committee.
According to federal papers made public Thursday, Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, transferred more than $250 million to Donald Trump in the closing months of this year's election to assist him win the presidency.Although the $5.4 million in donations is a small portion of Musk's much larger fund, it represents a record amount of money contributed by a single donor to the succeeding pro-Trump administration.
Musk's $20 million donation to a super PAC named after the late liberal Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was one of his more unusual initiatives. The PAC caused controversy by exploiting Ginsburg's legacy, despite its goal of softening Trump's position on abortion.
Musk's flagship super PAC, America PAC, received the majority of his funding. In the latter weeks of the race, he contributed $239 million in cash and in-kind, including three cheques totaling $25 million. Musk believed that Trump was essential to defeating President Biden, so the PAC concentrated on ground-game efforts for him. Musk's support for Trump grew after an attempted assassination in July, and he aggressively campaigned in Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state.
How Musk targets progressive prosecutors and finances Trump's agenda
Shortly after Election Day, Musk also gave America PAC $4 million during the pre-election campaign. He intends to continue running the PAC with the goal of furthering Trump's policies and going after progressive prosecutors.
By contributing $12 million to organizations that back GOP Senate candidates, such as the Senate Leadership Fund and Sentinel Action Fund, Musk also contributed to other Republican initiatives. He may have also provided funding to unidentified dark-money organizations, according to federal documents.
According to the documents, Musk is the only contributor to RBG PAC, a nonprofit that uses Ginsburg's reputation to support Trump. With the slogan "Great Minds Think Alike" and pictures of Trump and Ginsburg together, the advertisements asserted that Trump shared Ginsburg's views on abortion. Ginsburg's family, including her granddaughter Clara Spera, harshly criticized the campaign, calling it "appalling."
"It is absolutely disgusting that she would endorse Donald Trump's reelection campaign, and more especially, that she would agree with his stance on abortion," he stated.
Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy were named to head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) following Trump's win.
