Two victories in the next four Test matches against Australia will also be sufficient for India to place in the top two and advance to the WTC 2025 final, provided that England defeats New Zealand 3-0, 2-0, or 2-1 in the forthcoming three-match Test series and the South Africa-Sri Lanka series concludes with a score of 0-0.With 61.11 PCT%, the Indian men's cricket team is ranked first in the ICC World Test Championship 2023–25 points standings. After defeating the Baggy Greens by 295 runs in the opening Test of the current five-match series at Optus Stadium in Perth, India overtook Australia (57.69 PCT%) from the top spot.
To be certain of placing in the top two and making it to the WTC final for the third consecutive season, India must win at least three of the final four games in the series.
India competed in the 2021 and 2023 World Tennis Championship finals, but lost both times. India's chances of making it to the WTC 2025 final were severely damaged by a 0–3 loss to New Zealand in a home series. India has maintained its aspirations, though, by defeating Australia in the opening Test match at Optus Stadium.
India currently needs at least three more victories to guarantee a spot in the top two, but if the outcomes of the forthcoming three-match Test series between England and New Zealand and the two-match series between South Africa and Sri Lanka favor India, the world No. 2 Test team's task will be cut short.
New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka are vying with India and Australia to be in the top two, while England is already eliminated from the fight to advance to the WTC 2025 final at Lord's next year.
However, the Kiwis will not be able to conclude the WTC 2023–25 season with more than 50 PCT% if England wins the series 3-0, 2-0, or 2-1. In this scenario, India will finish ahead of the Black Caps with just one more victory or two draws against Australia in the upcoming four Test matches.
SL vs. SA series outcome
With a current PCT% of 55.56, Sri Lanka is ranked third in the WTC 2023-25 points table. Their PCT% will increase to 63.64 if they win both Tests in the forthcoming two-match series against South Africa. To place in the top two, India would then need to win at least two more Test matches.
South Africa's 0–2 loss to Sri Lanka will eliminate them from the WTC 2025 final race since, even if they defeat Pakistan in the upcoming home series, they won't be able to finish with a PCT% of more than 52.78.
However, South Africa's PCT% will increase to 63.33 and Sri Lanka's PCT% would decrease to 45.45 if they defeat Sri Lanka 2-0. In such a situation, Sri Lanka cannot finish with more than 53.85 PCT%, even if they defeat Australia 2-0 in a two-match Test series the following year.
South Africa and Sri Lanka will have 54.55 and 53.33 PCT%, respectively, if the series concludes with a score of 1-1.
