Ukraine launches the first American missile strike against Russia.

Ukraine launches the first American missile strike against Russia.

As President Vladimir Putin approved a new nuclear doctrine that expanded the prerequisites for using atomic weapons, Ukrainian forces launched their first attack on a Russian border territory using missiles supplied by the West.

According to Russia's Defense Ministry, Ukraine used ATACMS missiles to hit a military installation in the western Bryansk region, as reported by the news agency Interfax. It was the first attack that was known to have occurred after the administration of President Joe Biden authorized Kyiv's restricted use of the weapons to strike targets within Russia, two months before Donald Trump became office with the pledge to swiftly end the war.

The General Staff of Ukraine has previously acknowledged an attack on a warehouse in Karachev, detonating ammunition kept there approximately 115 kilometers (71 miles) from the Ukrainian border. The General Staff and Ukraine's Defense Ministry declined to comment on the missiles used, citing classified material. Five missiles were shot down by Russian forces, according to the country's defense ministry, and no deaths were recorded.

Putin, meanwhile, signed an order enabling Russia to use nuclear weapons in reaction to a conventional attack, including one by drones, that threatens its sovereignty on its territory. According to the online paper, Russia will consider any aggression by a nuclear-backed non-nuclear state against itself or its allies as a coordinated assault. This comes after Putin promised to update the doctrine in September.

As investors scrambled to purchase the safest assets, government bonds and traditional haven currencies like the Swiss franc and Japanese yen rose. Across the curve, the yield on US Treasuries dropped by at least six to seven basis points. The franc reached its highest level against the euro since August, while the yen increased by 0.8% vs the dollar.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, would interpret an attack by Kyiv utilizing Western missiles as a strike by a non-nuclear state backed by a nuclear power, Putin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, affirmed Tuesday.

According to the state-run Tass news agency, Peskov stated that "the Russian Federation retains the right to use nuclear weapons in the case of aggression using conventional weapons against it" that constitutes a serious danger to sovereignty or territorial integrity.

The Russian Putin has warned that enabling Ukraine to use Western long-range high-precision weaponry to strike deep within Russia would put the US and its European allies in direct confrontation with his nation.

Anticipating a Miracle

For months, Ukraine has been launching its own drones far into Russia, but the US weapons are more lethal. In response to what it claimed was a Ukrainian ATACMS missile attack in Sevastopol, the largest city in Crimea, the Russian Foreign Ministry called in the US ambassador in June. In 2014, Russia took control of Crimea.

Ukrainian officials have stated that they require the capacity to strike the aircraft and air sites that Russia utilizes for missile and glide-bomb attacks. Russia interrupted water and electricity supply over the weekend with one of its biggest drone and missile attacks since the start of the war.

In his speech to his nation's parliament on Tuesday, Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine will not cede its territorial rights and called for national unity. Zelenskiy told members in the Kyiv assembly, "You and I have to plow away while the entire world waits for a miracle from Trump." He made no mention of utilizing US-supplied missiles or the nocturnal strikes.

The attack on the Bryansk region of Russia coincides with the Group of 20 leaders' meeting in Brazil, where neither Zelenskiy nor Putin are present.
