Gautam Adani was accused by US authorities of participating in a plot to bribe Indian officials with more than $250 million in order to secure solar contracts.
According to the White House, it is aware of the accusations made against Adani Group chairman and Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, who was charged in New York for his involvement in a purported multibillion-dollar fraud and bribery scheme.According to US prosecutors, Gautam Adani and seven other defendants—among them his nephew Sagar Adani—agreed to bribe Indian government officials with around $265 million in order to secure contracts that would generate $2 billion in profit over the course of 20 years and build India's largest solar power plant project.
Indian government representatives have not yet responded, and Adani Group rejected the accusations as "baseless."
The government is aware of the claims against Adani, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters during a media briefing on Thursday.
The White House spokeswoman has expressed confidence that the United States can handle the ongoing situation surrounding Gautam Adani's bribery charges, stating that the relationship between the United States and India is based on a solid basis.
"Obviously, we are aware of these allegations, and regarding the specifics of those allegations against the Adani Group, I would have to refer you to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ)," Karine Jean-Pierre stated.
Jean-Pierre continued, "We think that the US-India relationship is based on a very solid foundation that is anchored in ties between our people and cooperation across a full range of global issues."
"We believe and we are confident about that we'll continue to navigate this issue as we have with other issues that may have come up as you just stated," the White House press secretary said, promoting strong India-US connections. The details of this are something that the SEC and DOJ may discuss individually, but once more, we think that the two countries' relationship has been firmly established.
Unfounded allegations: Adani Group
As the opposition leader called for the tycoon's arrest, Adani Group referred to US accusations that its billionaire founder Gautam Adani had paid over $250 million in bribes as "baseless" on Thursday.
The firm denial followed a more than 23% plunge in Mumbai shares of the industrialist's group the morning after a shocking indictment in New York accused him of purposefully deceiving foreign investors.
"The allegations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission against directors of Adani Green are baseless and denied," the company said in a statement.
"All possible legal recourse will be sought," it stated.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, stated that the businessmen ought to be arrested.
"We insist that Adani be taken into custody right away. Rahul Gandhi told reporters in New Delhi, "But we know that won't happen because Modi is protecting him."
"Modi is controlled by Adani, so even if he wants to, he can't act," the Congress MP claimed.
The BJP, however, pointed out that none of the four states mentioned in US courts had a BJP government and denounced Rahul Gandhi's assault on Prime Minister Modi as part of his ongoing attempts to disparage its leader.
"Law will take its own course," Sambit Patra, a BJP spokesperson and member of parliament.
