The PM's Economic Advisory Council Chairman, Bibek Debroy, passes away at age 69.

Prior to receiving the Padma Shri, Mr. Debroy was the chancellor of Pune's Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE).


 

Bibek Debroy, a 69-year-old economist and the chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic advisory board, passed away today. Prior to receiving the Padma Shri, Mr. Debroy was the chancellor of Pune's Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE).
"Bibek Debroy passed away today at 7 am due to intestinal obstruction," stated AIIMS Delhi.

"Towering scholar" is how PM Modi characterized Mr. Debroy in his condolence message.

"Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a distinguished academic who was knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects, including politics, economics, history, culture, and spirituality. He made a lasting impression on India's intellectual landscape with his works. PM Modi wrote on social media, "In addition to his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth."

Mr. Debroy received his education at Trinity College in Cambridge, Delhi School of Economics, Presidency College in Kolkata, and Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur.

He held positions as the Director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms, as well as at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi, the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, and Presidency College in Kolkata.

"Excellent academician" is how Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan characterized the economist.
