Telangana's first year of Congress rule: Scams, broken promises, and escalating demonstrations

The Congress government declared its intention to alter the state emblem and the statue of Telangana Thalli after taking office. Many questioned the necessity of the move, which caused controversy. The government responded by establishing a cabinet panel to compile proposals and comments from different groups.

Hyderabad: At the very least, voters may have anticipated that the Congress would attempt to emulate the previous BRS government's record when they took office a year ago. However, Telangana has witnessed dissatisfaction from various facets of society, complaints of unfulfilled promises, claims of scams involving even the Chief Minister, and consequent protests, even by the uniformed force, during the past year. As if they weren't enough, practically all of the projects that the Congress government in the last 11 months has met with stiff opposition.

The Telangana Thalli statue and the state insignia would undergo alterations, the Congress government said shortly after taking office. A dispute erupted right once, with many contesting the necessity of the shift. As a result, the administration was forced to form a cabinet subcommittee to gather input from all sectors and formulate its own proposals.

City of Pharma
The revelation that the Pharma City in Mucherla was being abandoned and that ten Pharma Villages would be built in its stead came next. However, the State government asserted that the project was still underway in spite of legal objections when the High Court asked for clarity on it in September.
Many people, particularly farmers in the Kodangal seat of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, are against the pharma villages. The protests have progressed to the Lagacherla case, where locals locked up Congress representatives during a public hearing program in Dudyala mandal. The construction of Pharma Village has also angered farmers in Dappur, Vaddy, and Malgi of Nyalkal Mandal in Sangareddy.

HYDRAA
The government announced the creation of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) just as things were starting to get organized. HYDRAA has been in the headlines since day one for a variety of reasons, including whether it is legal. To give the agency more legal support, the government had to pass an ordinance.

Unrest was sparked by HYDRAA's demolition of unpermitted buildings in lake regions and other locations. Pallam Raju, a former Congress MP, was among those who questioned the HYDRAA's selective demolitions, which were blatantly illegal. Even the High Court took action against HYDRAA and told the agency to change its behavior and abide by the rules.

Demolitions of Musi
The Musi Riverfront Development Project has entered the scene in addition to HYDRAA. Residents and all other political parties strongly objected to the State government's marking and demolition of homes along the riverbed in several locations even before the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was written. Due of the strong opposition to the demolitions, the impacted homeowners demanded that the State government halt the project and turned to the BRS for assistance.
Similar views were expressed by academics and nonprofit groups, who urged the government to establish additional STPs in order to solve the fundamental problem of reducing the flow of murky water into the river. Other than BRS, every other party, including the Left parties that support the Congress, criticized the  government for demolishing houses of the poor.

Due to the company's alleged involvement in several problems, the State government's decision to include Singapore-based Meinhardt as part of the consortium for producing the DPR further sparked rhetorical sparring between the Congress and BRS.

Caste census Despite the Congress government's introduction of the caste census, some are objecting to the survey's questions. Many people are criticizing the government for requesting personal information and are refusing to divulge it. Regarding the status of Praja Palana applications that were gathered in December of last year, many are even asking the enumerators questions.

The New Zoo Park
Given the limited funding for the project, the government's objectives were called into question by the poorly considered decision to build a new zoo park on the outskirts of the city in addition to the already-existing Nehru Zoological Park.
The Forum for Good Governance vehemently opposed the government's decision, urging the chief minister to prioritize the State's damaged health and education systems over building a new zoo complex.

The Secretariat
Due to Vastu restrictions, the Congress government is now implementing certain reforms at the Secretariat after criticizing the previous administration.

The Chief Minister is currently entering the premises through the North East Gate since the Secretariat's main gate has been shut. Furthermore, a new road from Gate 2 to Gate 4 will be built, and the Bahubali Gate will be moved to the northeast end.

The Chief Minister was criticized by former Minister T Harish Rao for the Secretariat's reforms. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had chastised the previous government for emphasizing Vastu when they built the Secretariat using green technology and fire safety regulations. However, Harish Rao stated that the same Chief Minister is currently frequently altering the Secretariat to comply with Vastu.

The statue of Rajiv Gandhi
Finally, even the Gandhi family was not impressed by the Congress government's decision to erect a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in front of the Telangana Martyrs Memorial and across from the Secretariat. Consequently, none of the Gandhi family members attended the September 17 statue launching ceremony. Additionally, the BRS has stated that when the party regains power, the statue would be moved to a new location.
