Ranji round 5, day 2: Bengal fights back after Shami's early strike

Bengal fights back after Shami's early strike

Baroda maintains their lead in Group A.

Baroda defeated Meghalaya in just four sessions to earn a bonus-point victory, giving us our first round five outright result. They are in a strong position to earn one of the two quarterfinal spots from this group after winning four of their last five games.

If off-spinner Mahesh Pithiya took six wickets in the first innings, left-arm spinner Ninad Rathva's six-for in the second innings was his chance to cause trouble.

Due to Baroda's domination, teams that appear to be in the best position relative to the rest of the pack, including Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir, will compete for second place. However, cricket is a game of momentum. For the white-ball leg, the first-class season will now take a two-month hiatus. Is Baroda able to continue this run? They are aware that all could be lost in an instant with a small slip-up.

Tats Wiz According to Sampath Bandarupalli, Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne's 594* partnership during Maharashtra vs. Delhi in 2016–17 was the previous greatest partnership in Ranji Trophy history.

It's interesting to note that the only other time in Ranji history that we've had two triple hundreds in a single innings was in 1989–1990, when AG Kripal Singh and WV Raman both hit triple hundreds.

Today's Shami: 9-3-20-4
Mohammed Shami went wicketless in his ten overs yesterday, finishing with 4 for 54 in 19 overs as Madhya Pradesh fell from 106/1 to 167 all out.

After Bengal was bowled out for 228 on day 2, Mohammed Shami got into the game very early by dismissing MP skipper Shubham Sharma and then all-rounder Saransh Jain to consider the chance of a significant lead. Shami was able to remove the final two hitters with just two more overs.

Shardul navigates the lower-order services
After his valiant actions at the Gabba, he was the talk of the country in January 2021. The nickname 'Lord Shardul' gained popularity among the team as well as on social media. However, after missing out on Australia's Test selection because the team administration and selectors favored the younger Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shard is now on the long path to redemption, almost four years later.

Shardul is recuperating from a foot injury that necessitated surgery in June. He had a quiet IPL 2024 season, taking five wickets in nine games for the Chennai Super Kings. He last played for India during the tour of South Africa towards the end of last year.

When asked why he wasn't chosen, India coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that he needed to "move on." Shardul intends to take Mumbai to the Ranji knockout stages and beyond in an attempt to disprove his critics.

Mumbai has bowled out the Services for 240 at the Palam Grounds, with Shardul finishing with figures of 4 for 46. Shardul took the two significant wickets of Pulkit Narang and captain Rajat Paliwal.

Shami makes a triumphant return
Bengal's morning keeps getting better. Following Suraj Jaiswal's two wickets, Shami steps in and takes Madhya Pradesh skipper Shubham Sharma clean bowled for eight, leaving them at 123 for four. In his first spell this morning, Shami has bowled six overs, and his current stats are 16-2-53-1.

Bengal fights back as Jaiswal attacks first.
As Bengal gains ground, quick bowler Suraj Jaiswal has struck twice in the opening ten minutes of play to dismiss Senapati and Patidar, the overnight MP batsmen. After being 103/1 overnight, MP is now 118/3 and requires a rebuild after Bengal's 228. Harpreet Bhatia and skipper Shubham Sharma are at the crease.

Only because Bengal is without their A-list fast bowlers, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, and Ishan Porel, is Jaiswal playing. He took three wickets every innings in Bengaluru last week against Karnataka. Bengal had a significant lead in the first innings thanks in large part to his strikes, particularly those of Mayank Agarwal and the young R Smaran.

Jaiswal, 24, has only played in nine first-class games and has already claimed 39 wickets. He will love the chance to bowl with Mohammed Shami and gain knowledge.

Images of Wednesday's Shami bowling match
Only a little video of Shami bowling on the first day of his return after almost a year has been made available to us due to the lack of a live stream or television coverage.

On the surface, Shami's total of 10 overs, split between two periods (four and six), is quite good. Bengal will need him to step up today if they are to maintain their hopes of containing Madhya Pradesh's first-inning total, even though he hasn't taken a wicket yet.

The current score is 103/1 against Bengal's 228. Rajat Patidar and Subranshu Senapati, who relocated from Odisha, are batting together. The two have grown to 52 since Mohammed Kaif, Shami's younger brother, gave birth to Bengal's first breakthrough.
