Politics, Not Wedding: Devendra Fadnavis Explains His Hasty Trip to Delhi

He was in the nation's capital to attend the wedding of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's daughter, according to Devendra Fadnavis.

New Delhi: Devendra Fadnavis, who is regarded as the leading candidate for Maharashtra's top position, arrived in Delhi Friday night, raising hopes of a meeting with the Central government to settle the Chief Ministership dispute. However, he dampened expectations by stating that there has been no scheduled meeting on the subject and that he is in the nation's capital to attend the wedding of the daughter of Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla.

There has been no declaration about the crucial matter of who would be the state's next chief minister, two days after the results of the Maharashtra assembly election were announced.

Shiv Sena, an ally, is eager for its leader, Eknath Shinde, to remain in the top position, even though Mr. Fadnavis has been viewed as the front-runner for the position. Off the record, leaders claim that he is deserving of the position because the ruling alliance won a landslide win thanks to the welfare initiatives of his government.

The "Bihar model" was invoked by Shiv Sena spokesperson Naresh Mhaske to support his claim that Mr. Shinde ought to remain chief minister. Even though the BJP performed better in the most recent assembly election, Nitish Kumar has remained the chief minister of Bihar.

"We believe Mr. Shinde ought to be the chief minister, similar to Bihar, where the BJP appointed JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar CM despite failing to consider the data.

Slogans calling for Mr. Shinde to be the Chief Minister were chanted during the Sena MLAs' meeting.

According to insiders, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP might back Mr. Fadnavis for the top position, tipping the scales in the BJP's favor.

Leaders of the ruling alliance's three parties have stated that they will meet and make a decision on the matter since the results were announced. At a press conference held after the election, Mr. Fadnavis even defused the situation by stating that they will speak with all of their allies, including Ramdas Athawale, the leader of the Republican Party of India-Athawale, which ran unsuccessfully for one seat under the BJP banner.

The Shiv Sena faction, led by Mr. Shinde, secured 57 seats, while the BJP, led by Mr. Fadnavis, secured the party's highest-ever total of 132 seats. With 41 seats secured by Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party group, the ruling Mahayuti alliance now holds a commanding 230 of the state's 288 seats.
