Nigeria will present PM Modi with a unique honor that only Queen Elizabeth has been given.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will become the second foreign dignitary to receive the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger award from Nigeria.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the second foreign dignitary to receive the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) title, after Queen Elizabeth in 1969, when Nigeria bestows the accolade on him. This is the 17th time a foreign nation has given PM Modi an international honor.

As PM Modi landed in Nigeria for the first stop of his three-nation tour—which also includes stops in Brazil and Guyana—the announcement was made. The goal of Modi's visit is to strengthen the strategic alliance between Nigeria and India, which has expanded dramatically in recent years.

The 'Key to the City' of Abuja was given to PM Modi by Nigerian Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who welcomed him to Abuja.

Nigerian-Indian relations

Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's request, PM Modi announced his first visit to Nigeria with the goal of enhancing strategic ties between the two nations.

"This will be my first visit to Nigeria, our important ally in the West African region, at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's request. Our Strategic Partnership, which is founded on a common conviction in democracy and pluralism, will be strengthened during my visit. In addition, I am excited to meet the Indian community and my Nigerian friends, who have welcomed me with heartfelt greetings in Hindi," the statement read. Nigeria and India have a long-standing, cordial, and friendly bilateral relationship.

PM Modi's visit marks the first time an Indian prime minister has visited Nigeria in 17 years.

Since 2007, India and Nigeria have maintained cordial bilateral ties with increasing cooperation in the areas of military, energy, and the economy. India's standing as a development partner has been strengthened by more than 200 Indian businesses investing more than $27 billion in important Nigerian sectors.
