The Kuki-Zo council protested the encounter of 11 militants, whom it described as "village volunteers," by calling for a "total shutdown."
As Kuki-Zo organizations demanded a total closure of hill regions in protest over the encounter of 11 suspected militants, the district administration in Jiribam, Manipur, enforced a curfew on Monday, according to news agency PTI.Carrying firearms, swords, sticks, stones, or other deadly weapons, as well as sharp-edged items or objects of any kind that may be used as offensive weapons, was forbidden by the district magistrate's (DM) order.
The curfew would not apply to government employees or security personnel who are responsible for upholding law and order or other vital services. In the event of emergencies, marriages, funerals, etc., within the designated area, written consent will also be needed.
According to the police report, which the DM referenced, there are concerns that the "illegal activities of some anti-social elements for the furtherance of their evil designs" may cause widespread disruptions to the peace and endanger humanity.
The Kuki-Zo Council declared a complete shutdown on Tuesday "beginning from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM in honor of the victims and to express our collective grief and solidarity who were brutally shot dead," claiming the deceased were "village volunteers." In order to hold the offenders accountable, the council also demanded an expeditious and comprehensive investigation.
