Leading figures from the INDIA Opposition alliance were present at Hemant Soren's swearing-in event at Ranchi's Moradabad Ground.
Ranchi: Days after the INDIA bloc's resounding victory in the Assembly elections, Hemant Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), took the oath of office as Chief Minister today. Leading figures from the INDIA Opposition alliance attended the swearing-in ceremony at Ranchi's Moradabad Ground.Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, Samajwadi Party chairman Akhilesh Yadav, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, West Bengal chairman Minister and Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee, and Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, were present. The Mahagathbandhan partners are still bargaining over cabinet seats, therefore Hemant Soren was the only one to take the oath today.
The JMM-led alliance gained 56 seats in the 81-member House in the state polls, the results of which were announced on Saturday. The Congress won 16 of 30 seats, while the party led by Hemant Soren, which ran for 41 seats, won 34. The CPIML took home four seats, while the RJD took home six.
Before becoming an MLA in 2009, 49-year-old Hemant Soren began his political career with a brief term in the Rajya Sabha. From 2010 to 2013, while JMM was in a coalition with the BJP and Arjun Munda was the chief minister, he held the position of deputy chief minister. With the JMM forming alliances with the Congress and RJD, he was appointed Chief Minister later in 2013. Mr. Soren became the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly after the BJP won the 2014 state election. After the 2019 Assembly election was won by the JMM-Congress combination, Mr. Soren began his second term as chief minister.
In connection with a money laundering investigation, the Enforcement Directorate arrested him earlier this year. Mr. Soren has refuted the accusations and charged that the BJP is utilizing the inquiry agency for its own political ends. He resigned before being arrested, and Champai Soren, a close ally, assumed the position of Chief Minister. Mr. Soren was released on bond following more than six months in custody. Champai Soren resigned from the JMM, claiming humiliation, as he attempted to assume the position of Chief Minister once more.
Kalpana, Mr. Soren's wife, also entered politics as a result of his arrest and incarceration. While her husband was away, Ms. Soren waged a vigorous campaign and went to large opposition party gatherings. She was also elected as an MLA in this Assembly election.
During the election campaign, the BJP sent its top leaders to Jharkhand in an attempt to win the state. Among other things, its campaign charged that the ruling party was helping refugees from Bangladesh infiltrate. However, the public welfare programs of the Hemant Soren administration and the outpouring of sorrow following his detention overshadowed the BJP's election campaign and restored the JMM to power.
