India uses INS Arighaat to successfully test a K-4 nuclear-capable missile.

India's nuclear deterrence capabilities were improved after the Indian Navy successfully tested the K-4 ballistic missile from the INS Arighaat submarine.

The Indian Navy successfully tested the 3,500-kilometer-range K-4 ballistic missile Thursday from the INS Arighaat, a recently delivered nuclear-powered submarine. The Bay of Bengal test represents a major turning point in India's defense capabilities, especially in terms of strengthening nuclear deterrence and confirming the nation's second-strike capacity.

The test results are being closely examined, defense sources told news agency ANI. The highest military and political leadership will then receive briefings to evaluate the missile's performance. To ensure that India can retaliate in the case of a nuclear strike, this trial is essential to fortifying the nation's nuclear triad.

Ballistic Missile K-4

One important weapon in India's arsenal is the K-4 ballistic missile, which is intended to be fired from underwater platforms. In order to ensure that the missile satisfies the strict operating requirements necessary for such strategic weapons, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has already carried out intensive trials to prepare it for its full-range test.

The INS Arighaat, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in August 2024, is now more operationally ready thanks to the successful test. With cutting-edge technology, including a more potent missile system than its predecessor, INS Arihant, the submarine was inaugurated at the Ship Building Centre in Vishakhapatnam.

The K-4 missiles on the INS Arighaat can hit targets more than 3,500 kilometers away, which is significantly farther than the 750-kilometer strike range of the K-15 missiles on the INS Arihant. With this modernization, India's nuclear-powered submarine fleet now includes the fearsome INS Arighaat, giving the nation more strength and flexibility in its strategic military posture.

The nuclear submarine of India

The first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine built in India, the INS Arihant, was put into service in 2018 and is part of the country's nuclear submarine fleet. The nation's deterrence capabilities will be significantly strengthened next year when the third ship in this class is admitted into the Navy.

INS Arighaat was commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who emphasised that the submarine is a demonstration of India's technological capabilities and the government's 'Aatmanirbharta' project.

Advanced design and manufacturing technologies, extensive research and development, the use of unique materials, intricate engineering, and very skilled workmanship were all used in the creation of INS Arighaat.

Its unique feature is that it features in-house technologies and equipment that were developed, built, produced, and integrated by Indian industry, scientists, and naval personnel.

This submarine is far more advanced than its predecessor, Arihant, thanks to the technological breakthroughs made on it domestically. Both INS Arihant and INS Arighaat will strengthen India's capabilities to ward off possible enemies and protect its interests as a nation.
