Australia's Perth — Australia was struggling at 104-5 at lunch on the fourth day of the first Border-Gavaskar series cricket test, but fast bowler Mohamed Siraj put India on the verge of victory.
On Monday, Siraj ended a tedious 62-run fifth wicket partnership by dismissing opener Usman Khawaja with his fourth ball and then dismissing star batsman Steve Smith.Smith was forced to edge a low catch behind wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant after Siraj switched ends with fellow fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah, Australia's top destroyer in the first innings with 5-30, had 2-26 at the half, while Siraj had 3-34.
After lunch, Australia will resume with Travis Head at 63 not out and Mitchell Marsh undefeated at five. The team must survive at least 165 overs over five sessions to keep India from establishing a 1-0 series lead.
After the 72-run victory at the WACA ground in January 2008, India is on the verge of winning just its second test match against Australia in Perth in six meetings. Additionally, it will be the tourists' tenth victory in fifty-three tests played in Australia.
Virat Kohli's brilliant 100 not out and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's magnificent hundreds established India's dominant position as the team ended its second innings at 487-6.
Following an exciting opening day in which 17 wickets were lost, Bumrah's excellent fast bowling stint saw Australia bowled for 104 in response to India's 150 all out.
Australia fell to 12-3 on the third night after setting an unachievable 534 runs to win the match on a pitch at Perth Stadium that is getting worse.
The hosts had a rough start to day four as Siraj made Khawaja top edge so Pant could finish a running catch and cut Australia to 17–4.
However, Head counterattacked his way to a 63-ball half-century with six fours, and Smith and Head managed to weather some tense moments against India's speed trio. So far, he has struck seven fours while facing 72 balls.
Smith, the team's most seasoned batsman, played a cautious innings, putting behind his first ball nought in the first innings, but a brilliant Siraj delivery ultimately put an end to it.
